Welcome to my blogworld

After years of reading other people’s blogs, I’ve decided it’s finally time to write my own. I haven’t done one up until now, because I’m not a fan of writing a blog just for the sake of writing—there’s enough of that going around. But now I have an idea that I’m excited about. So here I am. Welcome to my blogworld! It’s great to meet you.

Throughout my life, I have collaborated with others on communications. I enjoy helping people with their presenting and writing skills. I work in the information technology field, and many of my colleagues struggle when writing documents. It’s a true challenge to write accurately, clearly, and concisely. Even those of us who love to write can’t see when we’re missing the mark. (That’s when it helps to have a good editor!)

My friends tell me I have a true knack for providing communication tips that are fun and useful. I enjoy sharing stories and examples that illustrate what I’m talking about. There’s a lot of boring manuals out there that tell us “the rules.” Well, some of those rules are not actually rules (surprise!), and it can be painful to figure out what really matters in communication. It should be easy, but it’s not.

This is where the fun comes in. I’m going to kick things up by using my favourite sci-fi and fantasy works to tell you what I’ve learned about communication. Whether you’re a huge fan of alternate universes or not, I hope you find this blog entertaining and informative.

  4. This is a fantastic idea, and your blog is very readable, too. I tutor ESL students part time, and sometimes find myself struggling to explain a particular concept. I’m already envisioning using some of your posts to help with this. Thanks!

    1. Thanks, Brenna! You have made my day. It’s wonderful to hear that my blog posts could be useful for your students. I’d be very interested to hear how it goes. I’ve taught communications concepts in the corporate workplace, and I have found that using stories and relatable examples is a key part of the learning process. The tough part is coming up with the right examples! Please let me know if there’s a particular concept you are interested in, and I’ll see if I can write about it once inspiration hits. 🙂

Happy to make your day. 🙂 This is a very tiny thing, but I find that one of the things my ESL students struggle with the most is when to use “the,” “a,” and “an.” In some languages, there really isn’t a comparable equivalent. I’m decent at coming up with examples, but this one often proves really tricky for them because there are so many variations and exceptions.

      2. Hi Brenna, some of my colleagues also struggle with when to use “the” in a document. I’m going to think about that one and see about a future post. I haven’t run across a lot of resources that explain the concept of articles and how they work in a sentence. This is inspiring me to do some further research, and see how I can spin it for sci-fi fun. Thanks for the idea. 🙂
